General Rules
  1. All users are encouraged to offer comments, complaints or ideas.
  2. This service is provided for the benefit of members of UNSW COMPSOC.
  3. All users are expected to behave in a mature manner.
  4. Use of the server is dictated by "University Rules Relating to Student Use of Computing and Electronic Communications Facilities" (http://www.infonet.unsw.edu.au/poldoc/rulcomp.htm).
  5. Inappropriate, and/or disruptive behaviour will not be tolerated.
  6. The operators take a very dim view of plagiarism, and are likely to report you to the lecturer-in-charge of the subject.
  7. Most channels are self-policing, and may have their own rules. By joining a channel, you agree to follow the rules set for that channel.
"Official" Channels
IRC is split up into different discussion groups, called "channels". There are a couple of "official" channels. Currently, these are
  • #compsoc
  • #oper
Some subjects may also maintain their own channels for discussion and/or help.
Services
IRC "services" are available - these can provide channel and nickname registration.
  • Inappropriate nicknames or channels may be banned.
  • If you register a channel, you are therefore responsible for it. This means that you should see that the behaviour on the channel is appropriate, and that nobody breaks any of the server rules. It also means that you are resonsible for policing and setting the policy for your own channel.
Complaints

If you have a complaint, then feel free to contact irc at unsw.compsoc.net. To get a more appropriate, faster response, however, it may be better to contact the person responsible for the irc channel, or speak to an administrator on #oper.

To see who the person responsible for the channel is, type /msg chanserv info #channel (replacing '#channel' with the name of the channel you are interested in).

Discipline
  • Firstly, a warning will be given.
  • If the warning is not heeded, or the behavour does not cease, a ban may be placed.
  • A ban may last anywhere between 1 and 7 days.
  • Repeat offenders will be banned for longer lengths of time.
If you wish to appeal, or have a complaint then please contact irc at unsw.compsoc.net. If you are a CSE student, and are not happy with the response, you can ask the CSE Student Representatives to mediate the dispute.
